Milan to host 2015 World Expo

Italy’s financial and fashion capital Milan has been picked to host the 2015 edition of the World Expo. Also running in the contest was the Turkish city of Izmir, which hoped to host the event for the first time in the country’s history.

 

The Italian city of Milan will host the 2015 World Exposition, expo officials said on Monday.
 
The Paris-based International Exhibitions Bureau chose Milan over the Turkish city of Izmir in a secret ballot of its 140 members.
 
The Italian organisers have promised massive investment to prepare their city for the expected influx of visitors and say the theme of their fair will be food safety.

Hosting the Expo can either make or break a city’s reputation. The Paris world fair of 1889 memorably included the creation of the Eiffel Tower, while Spain’s Seville put itself on the international travel map with its Expo in 1992.
 
But the Hanover Expo of 2000, billed as the biggest and best world fair ever, drew media ridicule and outraged taxpayers in Germany after running up losses of more than $1 billion.

The next world Expo will be staged in Shanghai in 2010.
